What led you to become a children’s therapist?
For a semester in college, I lived and taught at a boarding school on a Navajo reservation for children. I gravitated toward the school counseling office, where there was a little boy with autism. I saw how with a little extra support and attention, this little boy flourished. It was this experience that solidified my desire to become a counselor and help many more children through life’s struggles.
What is your educational and career background?
I earned my graduate degree in Counseling and received the award for Outstanding Achievement at The Graduate Level. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Behavior Specialist, National Certified Counselor, and a Certified Multi-Systemic Therapist. I have experience counseling children (and families) of those with autism, anxiety, depression, trauma, as well as juvenile offenders. Over the last decade I’ve worked at large mental health agencies then opened my own private counseling practice in 2017.
What was your inspiration in becoming an author?
I was inspired to become an author to help children learn important social and emotional tools that I have found are key in living a happy, resilient and peaceful life. As a therapist, I see daily what can happen when children, teens and young adults acquire these skills…and sadly, what can happen when they haven’t developed these skills. Fortunately, it is never too late to learn and grow, and what I know for certain is that when children are introduced to empowering social-emotional “Super Skills” early on, they are much more likely to incorporate these healthy habits into their lives. Therefore, I started writing the Super Skills series to share these important ideas and strategies with little readers in a fun and interactive way!
What do you think is most important for me and readers to know about you?
I am a therapist, mom to 3, and a big believer in the importance of social-emotional learning and introducing coping skills to kids when they are young, as a protective factor against developing anxiety and/or depression later in life. In my counseling practice and books, I help equip kids with the tools they need to grow self-esteem, build on their unique strengths and live a happy and healthy life!
Do you have any plans for any future work?
Yes, the Super Skills series is in the works, with the next book focusing on transforming anxiety and growing self-esteem. There is also a second series in progress too! Stay tuned for updates and useful, uplifting and encouraging tips on @lelise_counselor and @superskillsseries
I love finding new SEL resources and this title is an excellent resource for social emotional learning. It is so important to teach our children healthy coping skills, how to communicate and talk about their feelings, and to normalize the vast range of emotions they may feel.
This book is told from the point of view of a young boy who looks up to his big sister because of all the healthy coping skills she teaches him. Filled with fantastic ideas and step by step instructions, this book allows children to interact and practice these coping skills as they’re reading. To name a few of the gems included, there is deep breathing, self-affirmations, yoga, gratitude lists, and so many more.
I love the illustration style in this book and how well they depict the different coping techniques, making it simple for children to observe and practice along. The author @lelise_counselor is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Behavior Specialist who has first-hand experience of the benefits of children having a versatile “emotional toolbox”. Connecting with Lauren has been a joy and I highly recommend checking out her IG page. @superskillsseries @lelise_counselor
